The Public Interest Research Groups , or PIRGs, are among the nation's leading watchdog organizations dedicated to safeguarding the public interest and protecting the environment.

International Rivers Network. International Rivers Network (IRN) is the leading organization working to halt the construction of destructive river development projects and to promote sound river management options worldwide.

The Global Action and Information Network (GAIN) supports and encourages actions for a sustainable society. Its Web site is designed to give you easy access to information on environmental legislation and policy, environmental and sustainability issues, and what you can do.

The Video Project is the nation's only non-profit organization specializing in the distribution of videos and multimedia programs on the environment, hands-on science, human rights, and related concerns.

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy's mission is to create environmentally and economically sustainable communities and regions through sound agriculture and trade policy.

National Wildlife Federation brings Ranger Rick and much much more to the World Wide Web.

The International Academy at Santa Barbara is a non-profit educational institution established in 1960 to improve understanding of issues affecting life on our planet. Its special focus is on the environment and international relations. The site describes and demonstrates the Academy's electronically searchable environmental database, Environmental Periodicals Bibliography (EPB).

The Rural Advancement Foundation International is an international non-governmental organization headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) and with offices in Pittsboro, North Carolina (USA). RAFI is dedicated to the conservation and sustainable improvement of agricultural biodiversity, and to the socially responsible development of technologies useful to rural societies. RAFI is concerned about the loss of genetic diversity - especially in agriculture - and about the impact of intellectual property rights on agriculture and world food security.

• American Whitewater Affiliation. The mission of the American Whitewater Affiliation is to conserve and restore America's whitewater resources and to enhance opportunities to enjoy them safely.

• The Anthropological Center for Research and Training on Global Environmental Change is a research and training facility devoted to studying the human dimensions on global environmental change in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
• The Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) home page includes information about ASLE activities, publications, and membership information, as well as links to related web pages from government; outdoor recreation sources; libraries, museums, and exhibits; organizations; and other information providers in literature and environment.

California Exotic Pest Plant Council (CEPPC)

• Cascadia Planet, whose mission includes "To network information from around the world that gives people at the grassroots of Cascadia and the Northwest the knowledge they need to make changes in this region."

• The Centre for Environmental Labelling at the University of British Columbia is working towards the harmonization of eco-labeling programs throughout the world. (See also Global Ecolabelling Network.)
• The Centre for Marine Environmental Initiatives aims to promote sustainable utilization of the marine environment by providing training and education programs, industrial research and technology transfer, and by participating effectively and responsibly in public policy initiatives on marine environmental issues.

Commission on San Francisco's Environment

• Conservation International is a nonprofit organization using science, economics, policy, and community involvement to promote biodiversity conservation in endangered ecosystems worldwide.

• The Council on Economic Priorities is a public service research organization dedicated to accurate and impartial analysis of the social and environmental records of corporations.
• The Deep Green Exchange, maintained by Jim Wight: "Please leave your egos at the door."
• The Earth Council is a non-governmental organization created as a direct result of the Earth Summit to promote sustainable development.

Earth First!

Earth Force is kids all across America who care about the Earth and are doing something to help it. There's no membership fee. You just have to be a kid and you have to be willing to take action to help the environment.

Earth Island Institute. Life on Earth is imperiled by human degradation of the biosphere. Earth Island Institute develops and supports projects that counteract threats to the biological diversity and cultural diversity that sustains the environment. Through education and activism, these projects promote the conservation, protection, and restoration of the Earth.

Earth Negotiations Bulletin

• The mission of Earthwatch is to improve human understanding of the planet, the diversity of its inhabitants, and the processes that affect the quality of life on Earth. As a member of Earthwatch, you may volunteer on scientific expeditions that help to improve the quality and management of life's resources.
• EcoNews Africa is an NGO initiative that analyses global environment and development issues from an African perspective and reports on local, national, and regional activities that contribute to global solutions. EcoNews Africa is a joint project of the Africa Water Network (AWN), Climate Network Africa (CNA), the Environment Liaison Center International (ELCI) and the International Outreach Program of KENGO.

The Environmental Careers Organization is a national non-profit dedicated since 1972 to promoting careers in the environment, specializing in paid internships, career counseling, employment resources, conferences, and job listings.

The Environmental Defense Fund gets to the root of environmental problems. EDF works to prevent pollution before it occurs, to increase the effectiveness of environmental regulations, and to build broad new coalitions to protect the environment.

The Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (E-LAW) is an international network of public interest attorneys, scientists and other advocates sharing expertise and legal and scientific information across borders in defense of the environment. Participants in the E-LAW network come from over 40 different countries.

• Global Action and Information Network (GAIN). GAIN provides information to support and encourage action for sustainability and environmental preservation. Information includes environmental legislation tracking, legislative and lifestyle action suggestions, background and statistical information on a wide range of environmental and sustainability issues, and referrals.

• The International Dark Sky Association's goal is to be effective -- through education (a) about the value and effectiveness of quality nighttime lighting and (b) of the solutions to the problems -- in stopping the adverse environmental impact of light pollution and space debris.

• The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independent policy research institute on sustainable development in Canada.

League of Conservation Voters is the bipartisan political arm of the environmental movement and seeks election of a pro-environment majority in both the House and Senate to ensure the future of environmental protection. Through the LCV National Environmental Scorecard, compiled after each Congressional session, LCV holds Members of Congress accountable and urges all voters to vote for the earth on Election Day.

The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy is a non-profit and tax-exempt educational institution established in 1974. Through its research, courses, conferences and publications, the Institute seeks to advance and disseminate knowledge of critical issues in land and tax policy.

• Magic, founded in 1972, exists to demonstrate how people can learn and apply methods and principles of ecology to discover and further common interests of humankind.
• The National Association of Physicians for the Environment is a medical organization whose mission is to provide scientifically valid information about health and the environment.

• The National Parks and Conservation Association, a private non-profit citizen organization dedicated to protecting, preserving, and enhancing the U.S. National Park System.

• The Natural Resources Development Centre, Dublin, Ireland, is concerned with environmental management, natural resources and rural development using GIS and remote sensing.
• Neahtawanta Research and Education Center, a place of gathering and a community of kindred spirits, created to serve people and institutions interested in working toward a sustainable and just society.

• Northwest Environment Watch asks tough questions about how to reconcile economy and ecology, then answers them in clear, unflinching terms. It combines the latest findings from the natural and social sciences with a hard-nosed understanding of politics and human nature.
